Camel Ride is at leisure and not like the 5 minutes ride at Jaisalmer. You can witness the most beautiful sunset from this place. • Riding animal we call saddle adventure. The rider needs to be confident in the saddle.
• For camel ride, one should know few basic things before (from your host or guide) mounting on a camel.
• For jeep trip, one should ask the driver beforehand if you or any of your group member have any concern about health issue (senior citizens, child) to drive a bit less adventurous 'soft experience'.
• It's not a good idea to go camel riding and jeep adventure while pregnant.

At Osian desert safaris is open from July to April. However, if you want to avoid the monsoon and midday heat, then plan your tour between the month of October and March. Camel & Jeep safari is conducted twice in a day i.e. morning and afternoon. We recommends afternoon safari to enjoy beautiful sunset.

The timing for the morning safari is 6 AM and for afternoon safari, it is 4 PM. Tourists can enjoy jeep safari and camel rides. The duration of the safari tour would be approximately 1 and half to 3 hours.

We saw gazelle, deer and peacocks on the way. First we met a lovely family who explained the ceremonial ritual and through our guide told us fantastic stories. We were lucky enough to be here at the start of Holi festival so they were painting their floors in anticipation. We then drove to a potter who showed us how they make clay pots to hold water and other items they make, how they kiln them on an open kiln. It was so interesting and finally our wonderful guide, Chotaram took us to his house where his parents showed us their weaving. We had lunch made by Chotoram's wife in their house. The love the family have for one another and the natural laughter between them was infectious. If we ever come to Jodhpur again, we will definitely stay at their home stay. The food was out of this world and we learnt so much from Chotoram. He even bought us a delicious sugar cane drink to try on our arrival back into the city! Honestly, I cannot recommend him enough. Our guide Chhotuh was waiting for us at the pickup point in a jeep as advertised. Chhotuh was a perfect guide. He is from the Bishnoi village so really is the perfect guide with intimate knowledge that was so interesting to learn about their customs and life. Chhotuh’s wife cooked us traditional foods over an open fire. Although there was cutlery, Chhotu showed me how to eat with hands only which is an experience and surprisingly practical. This was followed by dinner at their home in a very family environment. Food was cooked on the wood fired Chulha. It’s an amazing experience! Choraram ji discussed in detail how the local artisans are benefitted by the interest shown by travellers in their art. It was really cool to see them do it and they sold some nice craft for a small price. Then we went to a family that showed us how they prepare opium and some other typical food of the region. All the while Ashok told us a lot about the cast system here and other stories of the region. We then went on a safari, ate desert berries from the trees, saw lots of wildlife and went to a natural water well. First we saw some wild animals like gazelles in the nature and after we visited three different families in the Village. There we learned about the local life and met very friendly people. We went on a short safari and saw some peacocks and gazelles, but the real highlight was going to the village and seeing how people live there. He explained in detail about the caste system and the different roles the castes play in the area. We participated in an opium ceremony, yes you get to consume opium but it’s a very small quantity so you won’t feel much if anything. The pottery studio was also fascinating, and we got to see the potter throw on his giant manually powered wheel. Finally we went to Ashok’s family home where they also have a rug weaving business and traditional mud huts. We saw his parents meticulously weaving a huge rug on the loom. His wife made us delicious Rajasthani food, very simple but the best meal I had in Jodhpur. There are opportunities to buy pottery and rugs if you want, but they’re not pushy about it. ITINERARY 1 (2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT)

Arrive Osian Camp. Enjoy the desert sunset on Camel back. One also has the choice of doing a Jeep Safari where our rugged 4X4 drive Jeeps will take you much deeper into the desert. You get to meet the local tribals, and experience their way of life. You also get to see wild life the likes of Peacock, Partridge, Fox, Chinkara, Blue Bull etc. An evening of music and dance awaits you on your return from the safari. Folk musicians entertain you around the camp fire.  Dinner and overnight at the camp.

After a leisurely breakfast you go on a temple tour before departing for your onward destination.

COST : DOUBLE TENT @ Rs. 9000/- ; SINGLE TENT @ Rs. 8000/-

ITINERARY 2 (3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS)

This Safari is a real hit with the guests who wish to explore in depth. It has also proved very popular with couples and honey mooners.

You are met at Bhikamkor by the Camp staff. After a light lunch and a rest (during which the Camp Boss briefs you in detail), you mount your camels and ride into the desert. Today you ride for about 2 hours to get accustomed to the camels. Tomorrow you have about 5 hours of riding to do. You arrive at the mobile camp in the middle of nowhere set up just for you. The Camp staff is in waiting to welcome you. Here you have your own tent, your dining tent, kitchen, your own butler, chef and waiters. Dinner around a campfire. Over night at the mobile camp.

After an early breakfast, you mount your camels again and head out into the desert. While on the Safari, your camel drivers and guide are trained professionals, experienced and very friendly. They will occasionally stop en-route for refreshments and rest at local tribal’s houses. After about 3 hours you reach an oasis where the Camp staff awaits you with hot lunch. Mattresses are laid out for you to stretch out a bit. After lunch and a rest, you ride on to the base camp at Osiyan. An evening of music and dance around the campfire where you are entertained by local folk musicians.

After a leisurely breakfast, you go on a temple tour of Osian before departing for your onward destination.

ITINERARY 3 – FULL DAY EXCURSION

If you are in Jodhpur, and your tight schedule does not permit you the experience of a night with us, a day excursion is a must. Here you visit the Jodhpur fort and drive on to Osian. Arrive Osian in time for lunch, and after a rest mount your camels to go on the camel safari. Return to the camp in time to enjoy a beautiful champagne sunset. After cocktails and dinner, guests depart for Jodhpur.

ITINERARY 4 – A NIGHT AT A “DHAANI”

The idea behind this is to give the guest a very affordable experience of the true feel of the desert, and the chance of staying and mingling with the tribals. This is the best way to discover the remote areas of the Thar Desert and the rugged people braving the odds of the desert. You are received at the Osian Railway / Bus Station, and transported by 4 wheel drive jeeps to a “DHAANI” (the houses of the tribal’s). The Camp Boss introduces you to the headman of the family who is going to be your host. After lunch, your host gets you to mount the camels and takes you on a Camel Safari to explore the desert. A quiet dinner prepared by the family, and a night under the most clear night skies you may have seen. The next morning you are transported back to Osian village by jeeps for your onward journey. We recommend at least two nights at the “DHAANI”.

We tell you about our safari The "Thar" engulfs in itself three prime cities of Rajasthan - Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur (Osian). Around these cities, one finds huge and endless stretches of sand dunes. Thar is a culture, a life in itself, a home for many trebles, animal and bird species. ABOUT OSIAN

Osian, an ancient small temple town in the Thar Desert, is located about 65 kms, North West of Jodhpur. Osian is a great centre of Brahmanical and Jain religions and contains the largest group of the Hindu and Jain temples in Rajasthan. These temples belong to the two periods, namely 8th century represented by nearly 12 temples and 12th century represented by 6 temples.

History of Osian

In the medieval period, Osian was a large and bustling town and caravans from Arabia, Persia, Afghanistan and central Asia arrived here for trade. Osian was also the capital of the Gurjara Pratihara dynasty from the 8th to 12th century. Osian was an important centre of pilgrimage between the 8th and 9th centuries. This can be known from the surviving Hindu temples of the Vaishnava, Surya (Sun) and Shakti (mother goddess) sects. The Brahminical influence was very strong in Osian during that period and later, Jainism also flourished in the place through the Gurjara Pratihara dynasty. But still, various Hindu devotees visit the Osian temple dedicated to the goddess Sachiyamata. In ancient times, Osian was known as Ukeshpur.
